How to seal outdoor furniture?

In late summer in the Pacific North West (PNW), mold will start to grow on wooden furniture. Therefore, it is extremely important to protect any outdoor wooden furniture before it even starts to rain to avoid having to resand.

Step 1

The first step is to clean the entire sofa. Sand any mold that does not come off easily before sealing.

Step 2

Polycrylic and polyurethane are widely used to protect outdoor wooden furniture.

These outdoor sofas were protected using water-based polyurethane as a water-based stain was applied. If you used an oil based stain, then make sure to use an oil-based polyurethane.

Step 3

Store away anything that can potentially grown mold. The dropcloths — used as curtains on the pavilion — and the pillow and mattress covers were washed with bleach before storing. The mattresses were stored away as well.

If you have mold growing on any of your patio decor, bleach can help remove it. First, try watering down bleach before applying it to anything. If the mold is still not being removed, then try applying bleach directly! That is why I love white covers as bleach can easily take away any stubborn stains or mold.

Patio spaces can still be enjoyed during cold fall and winter seasons. Pavilions can offer coverage and firepits can offer heat.
